The most vulnerable patients, such as premature babies, require IV nutrients to grow and fight disease. Yet, over the last several years a shortage of these critical nutrients has developed in the US. As a result, patients do not receive proper nutrition, lingering on the fringe of health and even dying. Despite the morbidity and excessive health costs associated with improper nutrition, the FDA has not acted to import these nutrients, facilitate reliable production, or secure a stockpile. Europe is not experiencing shortages and has reliable suppliers that adhere to stringent safety standards. The FDA needs to move swiftly to resolve this health crisis by allowing the import of these vital nutrients.
