The state of CT recently adopted the new "ice pellet" law, in effect since December 31st, 2013, which criminalizes the accumulation of snow or ice on top of noncommercial vehicles.
The idea behind the law is well-meaning; however, the steep fine is definitely too much. The fine (set at $120 per offense) is higher than any other states' laws on snow accumulation: New Jersey is the only other state to fine drivers for not removing snow, and the fine is only set at a maximum of $75.
The fine is also the same, no matter how much of a danger the snow or ice poses; drivers have been fined $120 for having a half-an-inch of snow atop their vehicles.
This excessive fine should be addressed immediately.
