ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is currently listed as a valid mental disorder in Section 12 of the Social Security Administration's listing of mental disorders. ADHD causes the same types of symptoms in both children and adults, including trouble paying attention, hyperactivity, poor time management and organizational skills, forgetfulness, and impulsive behavior. (As there is no adult-onset ADHD, these characteristics must have been present since childhood.)
DSM IV (Diagnostics and Statistics Manual) also lists ADHD as code 314.01 and is considered a valid disability. A number of states have removed ADHD from the list. For this reason many adults and children can no longer receive state-funded services. This is totally unfair as many families cannot afford it.
