Hundreds of offenders have been sentenced to life without parole because it was the mandatory sentence corresponding to their crime. This infringes upon the rights of judges to actually interpret the law. Rather, the judges are forced to follow an equation with no inspection of the circumstances surrounding each case.
In several cases, judges state "my hands are tied" and deliver these sentences despite the fact that they would have issued a more appropriate punishment.
Many states have banned these mandatory sentences; however, victims' families have had unfair sway over the process and hence, the ban does not affect offenders that are already in prison.
Give true justice to these criminals, make the bans retroactive and give them a fair trial without these unconstitutional requirements.
