The administration should start a debate on and encourage congress to repeal National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984

The National Minimum Drinking Age Act (NMDAA) should be repealed. The federal government has no right to regulate such things as the drinking age, only the state governments are. Before 1984, states had all different drinking ages. Congress wanted to raise the drinking age to 21 nationally, but constitutionally could not. But the federal government found a way around this fact. The NMDAA declares that any state that does not have a minimum drinking age of 21 will have federal highway funds withheld. These are the same funds that go to maintain the interstate highways. So the federal government funded building these interstate highways in states and then says they won't pay to maintain them unless the state changes their drinking age laws. This is essentially blackmail. It’s time to repeal!
