Admission of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico as a State

Puerto Rico is the nation's most populous territory and represents the diversity America has to offer. The citizens of the territory are disappointed in their lack of actual representation in Congress, for their representative in the House of Representatives can only observe proceedings. Puerto Rico has no power over federal taxes or any other government mandates on the island, something the Founding Fathers would not approve of. By electing pro-government politicians, such as Ricky Rosselló, Puerto Ricans have spoken: they are ready for statehood. The federal government needs to (a) develop a cost-effective way to drastically reduce the island's debt without causing major harm to the states financially and (b) administer a binding referendum on the issue of statehood.
