In our current first-past-the-post voting system, it leaves room for only two political parties. However, with our current social progression, people are better represented by parties that hold their best interests in mind. A lot of times, people find that they are more in line with a third-party candidate, but realize that their vote for them can be heavily outweighed by the two major parties.
An alternative, or ranked choice voting provides an answer to those at a disadvantage by allowing their votes to count towards the candidates that they choose first, then splitting votes to remaining candidates. This voting system has already been implemented in Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN. It represents fairness, and removes the "lesser of two evils" voting that has become the norm.
