In the instant runoff system, each voter ranks their choices in order of preference. The candidate who receives the fewest first choice rankings is eliminated. All ballots are then recounted, with each ballot counting as one vote for each voter's highest ranked candidate who has not been eliminated. Specifically, voters who voted for the eliminated candidate have their ballots recounted for their second choice. This process continues until there are only two candidates left or one candidate has the majority.
The instant runoff voting system allows for greater democracy in elections and a more accurate election result.
