A delicate balance must be struck between protecting the 2nd Amendment rights of American citizens and promoting public safety. I propose the following sensible actions to promote responsible gun ownership and better screening for mental illness and criminal behavior amongst gun owners.
All firearms permit requestors should receive full criminal background checks and mental health screenings, and must endure a 30-day wait period
Firearms permit requestors should undergo practical and written safety exams
Firearms permits should expire after a set period of time (12-24 months). Renewal should require additional safety testing.
Permits should be issued by firearm type (rifle, handgun, shotgun, etc), and separate safety testing should be conducted for each type.
