Rampage shooters crave the spotlight and we should do everything possible to deprive them of it. We need to figure out how to balance the public interest in learning about a mass shooting with the public interest in reducing copycat crime. There are guidelines for reporting on suicides endorsed by the CDC and National Institutes of Mental Health. We ask that these agencies create similar guidelines for the reporting of mass shootings, which have become all too common in our country. Please consider the recommendations in these two articles:
