Non- age related hearing impairment, is a life long disability for which there is no insurance coverage under nearly all plans. This is an extremely costly disability, for which parents, and subsequently the hearing impaired individual, must pay out of pocket for their whole lives.
Hearing Aids, ranging from $3,000 - $5,000, must be purchased every 5-8 years. Visits to audiologists amount to $50 - $100 each visit. Repairs for an aid requiring factory work cost around $500, which does not include the additional fee for the required office visits before and after the aid is sent in.
This is a particularly burdensome omission to medical coverage. Vision impairment costs are most often covered or discounted with plans. Hearing Impairment is a more onerous financial and emotional stressor.
