The ability of citizens to record the public actions of state officials is critical in documenting and ending state abuses of power. Yet, far too many law abiding citizens are still being arrested for recording the actions of police and other state officials. There needs to be tougher laws protecting these citizens from these abuses of government power.
The courts have repeatedly affirmed this right but police continue to arrest, abuse, and prosecute citizens who try to exercise it; sometimes calling it interference to get around this fundamental right.
We need clear legislative action so there are fewer questions about what is and what isn't legal and the police need to be educated on these rights.
