Resources are important for manufacturing, some of which are expensive and tightly controlled by other governments. The US has the space science and technology to map out, robotically prepare, mine, and smelt rare earth materials and metals. These could be used back on Earth, or to support further space needs. This initiative would need US based manufacturing, logistics, and related skills thereby providing hundreds of thousands of jobs, all pursuing something tangible that would pay off our national debt and then some. It would eliminate the manufacturing advantage other countries have over us currently. The technology to do all this exist today, we just need the national focus and desire to achieve it.
