Foster Care for abused and neglected children is designed to provide short term care and loving support for children until they can be reunited with their parents/family members. Unfortunately, some children age out of the system and some are abused or mistreated while in the system. Foster parents receive a subsidy to help meet the needs of children in their care. The children may also receive medical services and childcare. However, the 2010 U.S. Census shows 4.9 million American children raised solely by their grandparents. Some grandparents struggle to make ends meet and do not receive any support. Yet, abused children are safe, nurtured and they are with family when grandparents are involved. More could take on this role if they received the same support s foster parents.
