US elected officials should have a "shelf-life", per say. The people of the United States should vote to restrict all elected officials to have a two-term limit, with ALL benefits ending at the end of 2nd term.
After being fired from your local fast food restaurant, or any other job, we do not continue to receive paychecks from those employers, so why should they? Put them back to work under the laws that they have created for "our benefit".
Just as the rest of the US citizens, the elected officials will have to return to the corporate world and join the rest of us in the search for jobs, food and healthcare.
Thus the result ends in tax payer's money spent elsewhere, and others are given a chance to make a difference.
