All inmates should do laundry for civilians as part of their punishment.

7 out of every 1,000 US citizens are in prison, resulting in the highest incarceration rate in the world. The incidence of incarceration therefore places a high burden on US taxpayers who do not receive any benefit from the rehabilitation of criminal offenders. Therefore, inmates should produce a service that adds value to society, and also face a heightened incentive to not commit crimes. For example a would-be offender would no longer just face a potential sentence of "5 years in prison" but rather "5 years of laundry". If stakes were raised from 5 years of a luxurious prison sentence full of Jerry Springer and playing XBox to a truly punitive sentence of doing laundry for the civilians these prisoners have wronged, then crime rate would be reduced and taxpayers would benefit.
