Secession will never be tolerated. Any state that declares itself to have left the USA will promptly be invaded by the US Military. We all know this to be true. In the event of open hostilities, many innocent people in the seceding state will become collateral damage, and many of our troops will perish as well. When our army is victorious, a protracted period of Martial Law and Reconstruction will inevitably follow, crippling that state's economy for years, while they are re-educated. Better to exterminate the separatists now while they are still only a few hundred thousand, before they become armed insurgents, and send the message once and for all that this is one Union you can never leave.
