One of the common denominators in mass shootings is clearly mental illness. In most cases, there were signs and failure to treat the known mental illnesses of the shooters. We as healthcare providers and allies of the mentally ill choose to highlight the failure of the healthcare system to supply even basic care to our citizens.
Deinstitutionalization and deficiencies in mental health care treatment have created a monumental mental health care crisis. Our lack of adequate care for those suffering from addiction has wasted unbelievable potential, caused crime, and destroyed valuable lives.
We must have enough inpatient beds for this underserved patient population. We do not treat patients with cancer by abandoning them to the streets and no support system. Let us have the same diligence.
