Internet service is provided by a few large companies that collaborate to keep speeds low and prices high, and competitors out of the market. So despite being the country that invented the internet, we now rank very low in the speed provided, and high in the prices we pay compared to many other countries.
Some municipalities, like Lafayette, LA, have been able to create their own fiber optic networks providing high speed at low cost, but the big corporations are fighting back. Nineteen states have now passed legislation prohibiting municipalities from competing with the big companies.
