The Dept of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides eligible Veterans a Veterans Identification Card (VIC) for use at VA facilities. The VIC Card displays the Veteran's name, picture, and special eligibility indicators -Service connected, Purple Heart, and Former POW, if applicable, on the front of the card.
The problem is, ONLY Veterans who are eligible for VA medical benefits or are very low income receive the card. Veterans who do not meet the above criteria or are not retired from the Military have no photo identification that may be used as proof of service. Carrying around a copy of one's DD214 (Separation document) is not realistic and does not serve as an Identification card.
All Veterans are heroes and have made considerable sacrifices that are worthy of at least an ID card.
