To allow armed servicemen/women the choice in receiving BAS or having their BAS auto-deducted from their monthly pay.

Created by K.B. on June 12, 2014

As a soldier stationed at Ft. Wainwright, AK, I have seen firsthand the problems with the current basic allowance for subsistence (BAS) auto-deduct. The problems I speak of may be widespread throughout the military and are as follows:
1. Lack of dining facility accessibility
a.hours
b.locations
c.maintenance closures
2. Quality of food
3. Lack of dining facility utilization
In Ft. Wainwright I've seen soldiers without transportation braving the harsh Alaskan winter to go to a DFAC that may or may not be open to wait in a long line for sub-standard chow. Many elect to buy their own groceries to avoid this scenario. When you have BAS being auto-deducted, it is unfair to spend another equal amount for quality food that can be eaten at the soldier's convenience.
