To allow our young men and women serving today at the respective US Military Academies to be granted retirement credit toward retirement for the years served at the academies. This was allowed up until sometime in the 1950's and then terminated, yet all the cadets and midshipmen are considered on active military duty while at the academies and abide by the UCMJ as well. Some say they are getting a free education, not so, each one has to serve a five year tour of duty for those years spent at the academies. Just like any other person in the military wishing to go to college while on active duty, whose duty tour is extended for payback to the US Government. As such the cadets and midshipmen should be afforded the same benefits.
