The US government should vastly increase the amount of money going to Medicare (through tax-increases, defense cuts, and elimination of waste) and allow US citizens 18 and up to buy into Medicare at a steadily increasing rate. For example: an 18 year old would pay $500 a year for health insurance, a 40 year old might pay closer to $3000. Make Medicare free for anyone under 18, or over 65. People below a certain income level would qualify for Medicaid, which should also receive a bit more money. This system would not only grant more Americans access to a basic and affordable level of health care, but would force private insurers to lower their rates and increase their quality of service to compete. It's time for America to join the rest of the developed world.
