Currently, college students who attend college for more than six credit hours (half-time) are required to work at least 20 hours a week in order to be eligible for Food Stamp benefits. Those students who attend college at less than half-time hours are exempt from this requirement.
This requirement exists even if the students are not receiving financial aid. It discriminates against students who are employed, but (in this economy) cannot receive 20 hours a week from their employers. It also discriminates against students who are unable (in this economy) to find employment (either part-time or full-time).
This requirement for Food Stamp benefits punishes poor students who are trying to make a better life for themselves and their families.
