Today, consumers are legally able to copy (rip) music tracks from CDs and distribute the music to their personal devices. However, although a DVD or Blu-ray may have been paid for and although tools have been released for copying purposes, it is illegal for one to make a video copy because video copying violates a copyright act (DMCA).
Judges have historically provided that it is legal to make a copy for backup purposes only. I propose that consumers be legally able to copy purchased video media and be legally able to distribute the video media to their devices, just as they are able to do currently with music.
