Allow convicted felons of a non violent background the ability to own firearms for family protection/hunting/sporting

I agree that not all felons should own firearms, but there are many out there that would not hurt a soul especially with a firearm. felons of a non violent background should be able to possess a firearm to protect his wife, kids, mother, grandmother, ect....... and at the same time be able to put food on his table. We should not discriminate on someones past but who they are as a person and not the mistakes they have made. For example lets say an honest, hard working man/woman in america goes out a few times drinking beer with his or her friends and over the span of several years gets three DUI's and now is a convicted felon and can't hunt, own a firearm of any kind, and most importantly can't protect his family. Something has to be done about the for the sake of our citizens and country.
