Lawrence Lessig made an oath that if he raised a million dollars in a month he would declare as a Presidential candidate. Thousands of people, connected with Lessig through academia and scholarly circles, thought that his ideas for government reform were so good that they would pay to get him into the debates.
The DNC declared that to be eligible for a debate, a candidate must have enough capital and supporters and the candidate must have at least 1% of the votes in the DNC's polls for six weeks before the debate. Lessig had the support to meet all of these requirements, except the DNC dropped Lessig from the poll three weeks before the debate.
