Famed explorer, Meriwether Lewis, of the Lewis and Clark expedition, supposedly took his own life in the early morning hours of October 11th 1809. Recent research, of which some accounts have been televised on the History Channel, have disputed the claim of suicide as being the cause of death. A coroner's inquest conducted in 1848 suggests Lewis died of multiple gunshot wounds. One shot to the head and the other to the chest. Common sense leads one to note the near impossibility of a self inflicted gunshot wound with a .69 caliber flintlock pistol. The Lewis family has repeatedly asked the Department of the Interior to allow for the exhumation of the body, which the request has been denied. Exhumation and modern forensic science will prove what really happened to Lewis.
