Familial DNA searches are an investigative tool about which there is not much legislation. A few states allow it as well as a few banning its use. The practice involves using DNA that it already in the system to get a partial match to crime scene DNA in order to identify the criminal as a family member of the person whose DNA it was compared to. This only acts as a lead for investigators and does not grant them a warrant nor does it give them any powers they would not normally have.
