Allow federal student loans previously consolidated with a spouse to be unconsolidated in the event of a divorce.

Created by A.G. on November 19, 2012

My ex-wife and I consolidated our federal student loans more than more than 10 years ago. After divorcing in 2009, we discovered that the US Department of Education doesn't allow for previously consolidated student loans to be "unconsolidated" under any circumstances. This has created a nightmare for us because both of our incomes must be taken into consideration with changes such as deferrments, forebearances or income contingent repayment schedules, not to mention we would both be 100% responsible for the others portion of the debt should either party decide not to continue paying.

My petition is for consolidated student loans to be unconsolidated and separated in the event of divorce so that both parties can both move on with their lives.
