Instant runoff voting, also know as preferential voting or ranked choice voting, is a voting system used to allow voters to rank candidates in an order of preference. If no candidate has a majority after the 1st counting, the lowest scoring candidate is eliminated, and then the ballots are recounted, using the next highest choice. This would reduce the effects of spoiler candidates, and tactical voting and allow independent candidates a larger voice in the election and campaigning processes.
