On 3 October 2015, during the battle to retake the city of Kunduz in Kunduz Province, Afghanistan from the Taliban, a US Air Force AC-130 gunship responded to a request for air support from Afghan Army forces. In violation of multiple US military rules of engagement and international law, the plane attacked the Kunduz Trauma Center, a hospital operated by the charity Doctors Without Borders and the only modern medical facility in hundreds of kilometers.
This is either a war crime or a grievous case of criminal negligence: the hospital's location had been given to all parties ahead of time and was clearly marked, and it was under attack for over an hour despite multiple calls to withdraw; 30 people were killed. MSF has requested an external investigation under the Geneva Conventions.
