As it stands in some states if a criminal attacks & you strike back with or without an object causing them serious bodily injury they can sue you for damages & medical expenses.
They can also file a complaint with the police department (if they call first) have you arrested for assault, battery, etc. It would be left up to the courts, judge, money spent on defense lawyers & in some cases jury to decide whether you are innocent or not.
The laws need to be amended (changed) to protect the victims. Criminals have no rights once they decide to either pull a knife, gun, rape, injure or murder. Victims rights need to upgraded so that any would be criminal will think twice before believing they can get away with it or profit from committing a crime.
