Currently, only students at ABA-approved law schools are eligible for FAFSA unsubsidized student loans. We are petitioning to allow students attending State accredited (often through their bar examiners) schools to be eligible for unsubsidized loans. Students that attend State accredited law schools are often academically allowed to sit for their respective Bar Examinations, despite not graduating from an ABA-approved school. Unsubsidized loans are currently at 6.8%, whereas private loans (like Sallie Mae) often charge more than double that rate. We are often students that have taken the LSAT and are qualified to enter ABA schools, yet we often are slightly older and have families and jobs. We cannot drop our responsibilities to attend ABA schools sometimes. Allow us the same rights.
