Legal residents pay work, pay taxes and abide by laws and regulations in the United States. Yet legal residents do not get a say in who creates those laws, even those legal residents who have been here for years. We are required to pay taxes, to sign up for the draft, to fight for the United States but we do not get the right to vote.
What better way to engender civic responsibility than allowing legal residents the ability to vote on their representatives? With a vested interest in those who lead us, we'd love the United States more than we already do.
The issue also harks back to "No taxation without representation", a slogan used at the birth of the United States. Is this still not true?
