The Bullion Depository at Fort Knox is the second largest gold deposit in the nation with a reported 4,500 metric tons of gold being stored there. In addition, it also has large stockpiles of diamonds and other gemstones, painkilling drugs such as opium, and possibly valuable antiques. In these economically uncertain times, there has been uncertainty to the actual existence of the gold being stored at the depository. The public has not seen the inside of the Bullion Depository since 1974, and even then there was doubt to the legitimacy of the gold and the amount of gold at the Depository. This petition is suggesting that reporters be let into the vaults where the gold is stored similar to what occurred in 1974. Doing this will increase public trust and reliability in the government.
