Currently the Forest Service is updating the Travel Management Plans for various National Forests. The stated purpose for updating these plans is to “address conflicts between motorized and non-motorized users” of the forest. To address this issue, the Forest Service has decided to ban mountain bikes from wilderness study areas and recommended wilderness areas. Mountain bikes are a quiet healthy low impact way to enjoy the outdoors. Traditionally mountain bikes have been allowed in these areas as long as they did not impact the area's wilderness potential. Closing these areas will only increase user conflict as mountain bikers are forced onto more popular trails used by hikers and equestrians. We ask President Obama and the Forest Service to leave these remote areas open to mountain bikes.
