Navy Submariner Matthew Hindes has full custody of his daughter, after the child's mother was accused of neglecting the girl. Matthew Hindes is currently stationed at sea and is unable to attend the custody hearing. As a result, he may lose his daughter, simply because he is defending this country. His wife, the girl's stepmother, has been caring for the girl while he is away.
The judge is refusing to acknowledge the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, which states, "In an action covered by this section in which the defendant is in military service, the court shall grant a stay of proceedings for a minimum period of 90 days…".
For Hindes to lose custody of his daughter, simply because he is on active duty for the United States Navy is wrong.
