The United States has several states that bar non-believers from holding public office in their state constitutions. They are: Arkansas, Maryland, Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas, South Carolina, and North Carolina. These states have been completely content to disallow citizens of this great nation to be disenfranchised. The US Constitution states that "no religious test shall be required" in order to hold office. This is unconstitutional and cannot be argued otherwise. These are some of the most untenable laws in the United States. They are citizens and should be afforded the same opportunities as every other American. How are these archaic laws allowed to still stand? These laws stand in direct violation of the First Amendment and Article 6 of the US Constitution.
