Under current DoD regulations, trans* individuals are barred from serving (openly) in the US military, even though the reason for this is based on outdated and prejudiced ideas, such as concerns over mental health, physical well being, and possible sexual deviancy. This is simply not the case, and there is scientific evidence to back it up: On March 13 of 2014, a panel organized by the Palm Center, a research institute at San Francisco State University, published a report that found no reason that there should be limitations on military service placed on transgender individuals. With the recent comments by Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, there has been hope among Americans that this hurdle will be passed, but we still ask the Obama Administration to overturn the current policy.
