Allow people in recovery from addiction to join armed forces despite past drug use

Recently when discussing the possibility of joining the AirGuard with a recruiter, I was told because of my past use of substances I was not eligible for a position in the AirGuard. When I informed the recruiter that I had been in recovery from active addiction for over seven years, raising a blended family of five children, earned a Master's degree in Social Work, working as a treatment coordinator in an inpatient addiction treatment facility and had been recently hired as an adjunct professor at a local community college, I was told, "good luck with your treatments."
I know from experience that with hard work and diligence "we do recover."
People in recovery can and do make great family members, employees, employers and can make great service men and women.
