Federal law should be amended so that a U.S. citizen who legally adopts a person age 16 or over from a foreign country has the right to live with his or her child in the U.S. like any other American family. U.S. law currently prohibits an adopted child from having any immigration rights if the child is adopted after his or her 16th birthday. This makes it impossible for a U.S. citizen to live with his or her child inside the U.S. This is inhumane and completely unfair because children adopted before their 16th birthday have the right to live in the U.S. with their parents and obtain U.S. citizenship.
