Transgender service members are common but forced to remain hidden. Transgender people are twice as likely to serve as other Americans. Most transgender service members complete their personal obligations, whether that is four years or twenty, separate honorably and start their gender transition. Due to his crimes, Private First Class Bradley Manning does not have this option.
We request that President Obama issue an executive order compelling the U.S. Army to allow PFC Manning to begin gender transition under the care of a qualified physician while incarcerated in military prison.
PFC Manning's transgender status was used against him in public and it sends a message of shame and fear to all currently serving transgender military personnel.
Take steps towards undoing that damage.
