The Postal Service faces budget issues due to a Congressional mandate it finance the next 75 years of health costs within a decade. Absent this onerous burden, the Postal Service would not be in financial difficulties. One way for the Postal Service to get out of these straights is a Postal Savings System.
Postal Savings Systems work across the globe. They provide banking services to poor and undeserved markets commercial banks avoid. They provide banking and savings services to the working poor who rely on payday loans because they lack access to banking institutions.
The Postal Service already possesses most of the needed infrastructure to function as banks. In addition to serving an under served segment of the population with important services, it will generate revenue.
