In difficult economic times, Americans are having trouble stretching their salaries to make ends meet. Higher education can simply no longer be seen as optional in the present job market. Individuals with college degrees, though ostensibly more qualified for higher paying employment, face the additional burden of financing their own education. Tuition costs continue to increase at a rate that is disproportional to other costs and to earnings. Student loans are a necessity for the vast majority to finance undergraduate and graduate degrees. Many aspects of personal finance are subsidized by the allowance of pre-tax contributions: retirement, health care spending, even child care. Please recognize the significance of student loan debt and ease the burden by allowing pre-tax payments.
