The United States has a law on the books, 8 U.S.C. 1481(a)(6), which allows citizens to renounce their citizenship while still in the United States. Such people would then be classified as aliens, and eligible for alien removal (deportation). Many people in federal and state prisons would like to take advantage of this law. It costs many tens of thousands of dollars per prisoner to keep these people in prison, and many more thousands of dollars per year to keep them on supervision after their release from prison. These people should be allowed to voluntarily renounce their citizenship and then be voluntarily deported IMMEDIATELY, never to return to the United States. This would save taxpayers millions of dollars instead of warehousing these criminals.
