Allow private students loans to be discharged through bankruptcy, whether through Congress or executive order.

Created by C.R. on January 30, 2014

Private student loan debt, and defaults, are at an all-time high. Big private student loan companies lobbied Congress to make private student loans nearly impossible to discharge through bankruptcy. This has created an environment of predatory lending where these companies give tens of thousands of dollars to young students, who know no better and who aren't even creditworthy to be lent this much money. These students graduate and are forced into payment plans that are impossible to pay and the lenders are unwilling to negotiate, because there is no incentive because they know that the students cannot discharge them. They're trapped forever. By allowing for these loans to be dischargeable, it would provide struggling borrowers some leverage with negotiating payments or to discharge.
