Please consider the impact of over $1 Trillion in outstanding student loans on the federal government, student borrowers, and the US economy. There are currently allowances for paying medical costs and transportation costs with pre-tax dollars. The student loan issue is significant and projected to get much larger. Getting a capped tax credit on student loan interest paid is not as effective as paying with pre-tax dollars.
If the federal govt enables teens to take out tens or hundreds of thousands in loans, it should take some of the responsibility for escalating tuition costs, and some of the responsibility for incentivising accelerated repayment.
The US economy is hobbled by the 'Failure to Launch' of students with massive debt loads.
Let's fix this worthwhile problem.
