Under the current bankruptcy laws, student loans cannot be discharged except in extraneous circumstances. There is a whole generation of students who went to college and borrowed money to pay for it. However, upon leaving college they were faced with one of the worst job markets since the Great Depression. Many took jobs making maybe a bit more than minimum wage and cannot feasibly repay the amount due while maintaining a basic standard of living. Money that is being paid back on these loans is money that is not helping improve our current economic situation. If someone can rack up thousands of dollars in credit card debt, and have it wiped clean in bankruptcy, those in student loan debt should be afforded the same opportunity. The opportunity of a fresh start.
