I pay a $100 a month for veterinary insurance for my 2 cats and, even with the insurance, spent almost $5000 in vet bills this year when I had an emergency with one. Their yearly wellness check-up with shots and routine bloodwork for the 17 year old was nearly $700.
Why shouldn't responsible pet owners be allowed to write off some of these medical expenses for their beloved four legged fami.ly members? Maybe more people would adopt animals if they knew some of the medical expenses could be declared on their taxes. And it would certainly be an incentive to have pets spayed and neutered thus cutting down on the number of unwanted puppies and kittens that fill the shelters. Cosmetic surgery is written off, why not surgery that saves a life?
